Simon Herrera

Dr. Simón Lua — Equine Veterinarian

Dr. Simón Lua developed a passion for horses at an early age while growing up around his grandfather’s ranch in Michoacán, Mexico, surrounded by dairy cattle and working horses. He earned his veterinary degree from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) in Mexico City, where he focused on large animal medicine and surgery.

He began his professional career at the Hipódromo de las Américas in Mexico City and later completed a surgical internship at Chino Valley Equine Hospital in California. After returning to Mexico, he spent seven years leading emergency and surgical services at a busy equine practice in Guadalajara EQCOVET.

Dr. Lua later moved back to the United States, where he obtained his U.S. veterinary license in Colorado and worked in a practice centered on equine sports medicine and performance care.

Now at Appalachian Animal Hospital, Dr. Lua focuses on emergency care and performance medicine, always striving to help every horse reach his full athletic potential. He is especially interested in modern therapies for joint disease and osteoarthritis, allowing horses to stay comfortable, sound, and performing at their best.

Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his family and participating in western equestrian sports.
